Hemodialysis - Treatment Methods for Kidney Failure.

A Guide to Understanding Hemodialysis

This set of Teaching Cards contains 6 double-sided color 8.5" x 11" laminated cards with both easy to understand wording and over sixty pictures.

Laminating permits easy bedside use as they can be wiped off with a damp cloth.

The set is held together by a releasable ring which allows the flexibility of bringing some or all of the cards to the bedside.

A Guide to Understanding Hemodialysis is appropriate for use in a predialysis, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, clinic or office setting.

Topics include:
* How dialysis works
* Dialysis accesses
* Dry or goal weight
* Principles of dialysis

This set of Teaching Cards starts of with a review of the normal function of the kidney as well as the need to remove waste products and extra fluid from the blood stream. This is followed by a description of an artificial kidney and dialysis machine. Both the activities while on dialysis and possible complication such as cramping and hypertension are presented.

The need for the renal diet, fluid control, medications and laboratory tests is reinforced throughout this set of cards.

Hemodialysis Access

This section includes a description of fistulas and grafts (while mentioning central venous catheters) with an emphasis on describing what they are and how to care for accesses. Creation of a fistula and graft are each depicted using plain terminology and clear diagrams.

Dry weight

There are easy to understand descriptions and pictures of:
* Fluid retention in renal failure
* The symptoms of too much fluid and too little fluid.

In addition, there is a 'before and after' picture of a person on a scale and a person on a scale with additional fluid in their body.

Principles of Dialysis

There is a full page colored graphic representation of the artificial kidney with waste products, fluid, salt, sugar, protein molecules and blood cells. Also included in this section is an easy to understand discussion of diffusion and osmosis.

'Principles of Dialysis', 'Dry or Goal Weight', and 'Hemodialysis Access' are also available as posters.
