This is a 12" x 18"
large font, full colour poster. This poster addresses some of the
more common issues surrounding AV Fistulas and Grafts for hemodialysis
use.
The poster is arranged into four
areas of discussion:
- The need for a vascular access
for hemodialysis
- A description of an AV Fistula
and Graft
- Common questions regarding a hemodialysis
access
- Care of the AV Fistula or Graft
The need for a vascular
access for hemodialysis
The focus of this section is
to describe the need for an access for hemodialysis and the surgical
intervention required for placement.
The questions that
are asked and addressed are:
- How do you take the small amount
of blood from my body?
- How do I get this new or changed
blood vessel?
A description of
a AV Fistula and Graft
The focus of this section
of the poster is to verbally and visually describe the creation/insertion
of an AV Fistula and Graft.
A preamble describing
the need for arteries and veins is followed by a more marked account
of an AV Fistula and Graft.
There are three graphic
illustrations and simplistic descriptions of an arm for both the
AV Fistula and Graft creation.
The first diagram for
each shows an artery and vein in an arm. The wording describes the
need to make a small opening in an artery and a Graft.
AV Fistula
The second diagram depicts the joining of the artery and vein for
a AV Fistula creation. The third diagram describes the maturation
of the AV Fistula.
Graft
The second diagram depicts
the placement of a synthetic Graft. The third diagram displays a
loop Graft.
Common questions
regarding a hemodialysis access
This section of the poster
attempts to answer the following questions:
- How do you get the blood out
of the Fistula or Graft?
- What if I don't have a Fistula
or Graft and I need dialysis?
- How much blood do you take out
of my body?
Care of the access
This section of the poster
is meant to provide an overview of care that is universally accepted.
People are advised, graphically and with words, not to have anything
constrictive on the access, check for patency, check for indications
of an infection and the possibility of AV Fistula exercises.
Specific program related
instructions are left up to the discretion of the renal professional.
The poster is laminated
with a 5-mm laminate to allow for easy cleaning.
