This is a 12" x 18" large font, full-coloured
poster with graphic representation of an artificial kidney. This
representation of the artificial kidney is suitable to demonstrate
either the principles of a dialyzer or a peritoneal membrane.
A line down the middle of the image
represents the semipermeable membrane. This line has openings throughout
with a blood side on the left and the dialysate side on the right.
There are four of the pictures of
the artificial kidney on this poster. The first three pictures introduce
different concepts of dialysis while the last and largest picture
combines the three previous with increasing details of the principles
of dialysis.
- The first picture: the small openings
in the membrane and the movement through the membrane.
- The second picture: the movement
of the waste products through the membrane and the concept of
diffusion.
- The third picture: the movement
of fluid through the membrane and the concept of osmosis.
- The final picture combines the
graphics of the first three pictures and introduces the concept
that blood and protein stay in the blood. This picture also introduces
the concept 'sugar' and 'salt' molecules are on both sides of
the membrane.
The following components are presented
with the accompanying graphics:
- Waste products - a garbage can
- Fluid - a water faucet
- Salt - a salt shaker
- Sugar - a representation of a
sugar cube
- Protein molecules
- Blood cells - red blood cell
Complimenting the graphic illustrations
of the artificial kidney the following questions are addressed using
easy to understand wording:
- How do the waste products get
out of my blood? v What can move through these openings?
- Why do the waste products move
through these openings?
- What will stay in my blood?
- Does phosphorous move through
these openings?
- What about electrolytes like potassium?
The poster is laminated with a 5-mm
laminate to allow for easy cleaning.
It is appropriate for use by renal
professionals in a predialysis, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis,
clinic or office setting.
Larger or smaller posters are available
as a special order.
